"I like to
write on an immediate level," says singer,
songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Dulcie Taylor.
To me, art is communication."
Delivered via a
clear, supple voice and lyrics that are powerfully
direct and down-to-earth, the 10 original songs on Mirrors
and Windows --Taylor's high energy second CD
for Black Iris Records -- beautifully reflect that
sentiment.
Dirty
Linen says - “Dulcie Taylor is a gifted
writer...she also has a compelling voice which she
employs with nuance and emotion.”
All
Music Guide says, “
Taylor
’s voice is as clear and versatile as her playing
and songwriting.”
Dulcie has released two CD's of all original
music on Black Iris Records - Diamond
& Glass (2002) won the Wammie for Best
Contemporary Folk Recording, and charted nationally
at non-commercial AAA; Mirrors
and Windows (2004) reached
No. 7 on the Roots Rock Chart at Roots Music Report
and was chosen as one of the twelve Best Recordings
of 2004 by Soundstage.
Dulcie, originally from
South Carolina
, now makes her home in Washington, DC., where she
serves on the Board for the Poetry Series at the Folger
Shakespeare Library.
When
asked about her influences, Dulcie says the biggest
was simply being raised in a small community.
“You’re in people’s faces a lot, which
makes you consider the human situation very closely.
Most of life is made up of the day-to-day
small things, so I look for the beauty in them.”
Her writing reflects that –
“She writes from the heart, for the
heart.”
